about

the lineage

Darkness is not an invention. It is a return. Practices of extended darkness appear across traditions and centuries, usually in the same shape: a person enters a dark, quiet space, stays long enough for the surface to settle, and comes out with something they could not reach in the light.

Chamber of darkness

an old practice

the dark room

Ancient traditions built dark chambers into temples and caves. Egypt, Tibet, the Americas: the forms differ, the pattern holds. Extended darkness was treated as serious work, prepared for, entered with guidance, and exited with obligation to what was learned. It was never entertainment. It was formation.

the modern return

the return

The practice nearly disappeared under electric light. It is returning now, for a reason nobody planned: modern life became the thing people need darkness to escape. Retreat centers in Oregon and Europe run waiting lists. The demand is not for mysticism. It is for a room where nothing is asking for your attention.

where we stand

our ground

To Be Born takes the old pattern, the threshold, the defined time, the guided return, and makes an accessible first version of it: six structured hours at home, with the physical retreat as the depth beyond it. We name our sources, keep our claims inside our evidence, and treat the practice with the seriousness it has always required.

A threshold between dark and light

"Every tradition that used darkness seriously used it with preparation and support. So do we."
